Dr. Richard R. Rush
Richard R. Rush became president of California State University Channel Islands in June 2001. As head of the 23rd and newest campus in the California State University system, Rush has hired the faculty and senior administrative staff and overseen the creation and development of the university’s strategic, academic and physical master plans as well as its budget and financial structure. Rush is also credited with successfully leading the university’s efforts to improve infrastructure and roads, acquire adjacent land, and achieve accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Rush serves on the boards of the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce, Community Memorial Hospital, Casa Pacifica, Santa Barbara Channel City Club, and the Tower Club, among others, as well as, on the board and executive committee of the Economic Development Cooperative – Ventura County. He chairs the P-16 Council of Ventura County which focuses on improving the college-going rates of students, particularly from communities with historically low participation.
Rush’s honors include the Distinguished Community Leader Award from the Ventura County Leadership Academy, Honorary Base Commander of Naval Base Ventura County, Pacific Coast Business Times’ Who's Who in Business Leadership, the Dr. James F. Cowan Award of Excellence in Education from the Ventura County Economic Development Association, the President’s Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators – Region VI, Statewide President of the Year from the California State Students Association, the Educator of the Year Award from the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce, and the President’s Award from the Ventura County NAACP.
