RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU) support SB 707 (Wolk); and be it further
RESOLVED: That the ASCSU distribute this resolution to the CSU Board of Trustees, CSU Chancellor, CSU campus Presidents, CSU campus Senate Chairs, California Faculty Association (CFA), California State Student Association (CSSA), Emeritus and Retired Faculty Association (ERFA), Senators Wolk and Jackson, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr., California College and University Police Chiefs Association.
RATIONALE: Under existing law, persons holding a valid license to carry a concealed firearm are exempt from the prohibitions relating to carrying firearms in school zones and on campuses of universities or colleges. SB 707 would prohibit a person with a concealed weapon permit from bringing a firearm onto K-12 school grounds or higher education campuses. The bill makes exception for certain law enforcement personnel.
SB 707 is in line with efforts to maintain school and university environments as gun-free zones. School authorities are responsible for the wellbeing and safety of students, and their discretion to provide written permission for individuals to carry a firearm on school grounds is maintained.
SB 707 is sponsored by the California College and University Police Chiefs Association. It is supported by the California State University.
