Commendation in Honor of Trustee Emerita Roberta Achtenberg

WHEREAS, Trustee Emerita Achtenberg came to us with her B.A. in history from UC Berkeley and her J.D. from the University of Utah, College of Law. She was a teaching fellow at the Stanford Law School and was Dean of the New College of California’s School of Law. She practiced law with Equal Rights Advocates and founded the National Center for Lesbian Rights; and

WHEREAS, Trustee Emerita Achtenberg ably served in the Clinton Administration, first as Assistant Secretary of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and later as Senior Advisor to then HUD Secretary Henry G. Cisneros. A former member of the Board of Supervisors for the City and County of San Francisco from 1990-1993, she also represented San Francisco as a Director for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District; and

WHEREAS, Trustee Emerita Achtenberg served in senior policy-making roles with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and the San Francisco Center for Economic Development from 1998-2004. She currently serves as a director of the Bank of San Francisco and the San Francisco-based software company, Andrew J. Wong, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Trustee Emerita Achtenberg has been a very dedicated supporter of the California State University (CSU), a resilient advocate in her leadership roles on the CSU Board of Trustees, and a strong proponent for public higher education; and

WHEREAS, Trustee Emerita Achtenberg was a long-term member of the CSU Board of Trustees serving from 1999-2015; she was an effective Vice Chair of the CSU Board of Trustees from 2004- 2006; and

WHEREAS, From 2006-2008, Trustee Emerita Achtenberg was an outstanding Chair of the CSU Board of Trustees overseeing budget, programmatic, policy decision-making, and presidential search committees for the system; and

WHEREAS, Trustee Emerita Achtenberg has successfully shared her expertise as an economic and workforce development consultant who took a lead in shaping the CSU’s Access to Excellence strategic plan; and

WHEREAS, Trustee Emerita Achtenberg has been recognized both locally and nationally for her community and public service; therefore be it

WHEREAS, That the Academic Senate CSU bestow its thanks and gratitude upon Roberta Achtenberg for her exemplary service and leadership contributions; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU extends it’s very best regards to Roberta Achtenberg, and wishes her well as she moves forward in all of her future endeavors.
