Commendation for Senator James E. Swartz

WHEREAS, Professor James E. Swartz has faithfully served the California State University, and specifically its campuses at Pomona, Fullerton and Long Beach since 1987; and

WHEREAS, He has been a campus and a statewide leader for more than a quarter century, serving on every committee of the Academic Senate at Pomona, as a Business Senator for more than six years and culminated his tenure as a CSU Senator serving with distinction as a leader on the Fiscal and Governmental Affairs Committee, the Instructional Technology and Learning Committee, and as Co-Chair of the 50th Anniversary Committee of the CSU Academic Senate, and

WHEREAS, He has served as Chair of the Department of International Business and Marketing at Pomona from 2009-2012 leading a period of unprecedented growth of majors, in published research and other faculty achievements, and a renewal in student club successes; and

WHEREAS, He has served as Chair of virtually every major committee in his Department, including Search, Curriculum, Personnel, Lecturer Review and Principles Oversight; and

WHEREAS, He has been a leader in research within his discipline, authoring or co-authoring thirty peer reviewed journal articles, literature reviews and monographs and more than forty peer reviewed conference papers and proceedings at conferences on four continents, and

WHEREAS, He has been a curriculum development leader, paving the way for the development of the largest career track in his Department including its entire curriculum, in addition to other enrichment courses as diverse as Honors Seminar in Leadership, Advertising Media Analysis and Planning and Advertising Campaigns, and

WHEREAS, He has been a leader in University service, notably as Faculty Athletics Representative, Task Force Examining Semester Conversion, ROTC Advisor, Beta Gamma Sigma Advisor, Ad Club Advisor, AMA Advisor, College RTP Committee, College Graduate Committee, and Faculty Veterans Center Advisor among many others, and

WHEREAS, He has been a leader in Community service, notably as Commissioner for City of Walnut, multiple participant in Relay for Life, Mountain Meadows leadership council among many others, and

WHEREAS, He has been a national leader in research, notably as editor or member of the editorial boards of five leading journals including the Journal of Advertising, Public Relations Review, International Journal of Business Disciplines, Military Review and American Journalism, and

WHEREAS, He has brought considerable distinction to his University by being named a Dwight D. Eisenhower Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution, a Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, a Senior Service College Fellow, a postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin Institute for Advanced Technology, and as Dean of the Consulting Faculty, United States Army Command and General Staff College, and

WHEREAS, He has served with distinction as a United States Army officer, earning this Nation’s third and fourth highest awards for service, the Department of Defense Superior Service Medal and the Legion of Merit, along with more than fifty medals, citations and badges in a career that culminated by being named Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon; and

WHEREAS, The CSU system has clearly benefited from James's work and unique skills; therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU commend Senator Swartz for his extraordinary service as a scholar, educator and contributions to shared governance; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU express its deep gratitude and respect to Senator Swartz for his time and labors and his devotion to the role of shared governance in the CSU; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU express its thanks to Senator Swartz for his valuable service to the ASCSU and offer its best wishes for success in his future endeavors, both professional and personal.
