Commendation of Professor John Tarjan

WHEREAS, John Tarjan has served the faculty of the California State University as a member of Academic Senate (ASCSU), representing his home campus of CSU Bakersfield with great distinction for sixteen years, since the 1997-1998 academic year; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan has contributed to the ASCSU in an impressive array of committee and other positions including: member of the Academic Affairs Committee (1998-99 and (2002-03), member of the Fiscal & Government Affairs Committee (2000-02), member of the General Education Advisory Committee (1998-2002, 2010-2011), member of ASSIST (1999-2008), member of IMPACT (2002-03), LDTP Committee (2004-08), Academic Council Liaison (2008-10), Academic Technology Advisory Committee (2008-10), Provosts Technology Steering Committee (2008-09), 2nd Academic Senate CSU Budget Specialist (2009-10). Vice Chair of the Academic Preparation and Educational Programs Committee (2012-2013); and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan has served in many leadership positions for the ASCSU including Chair of the General Education Advisory Committee (2006-2007), Secretary of the Executive Committee (2004-2005 and 2005-2006); and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan served as Chair of the ASCSU from 2008-2010 and as immediate Past Chair from 2010-2012; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan’s leadership extended beyond the CSU to serve higher education in the state of California through his participation in the Intersegmental Committee of Academic Senates (ICAS), which he chaired in 2008-09, as well as serving as chair of its Advocacy Task Force in 2009-10; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan represented, with great dignity, the entire faculty of the CSU in the challenging role of interfacing with system-wide administration; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan played an instrumental leadership role in organizing the 50th Anniversary celebration of the ASCSU; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan has demonstrated his type A+ personality by simultaneously taking ASCSU meeting notes, playing solitaire, writing resolutions, and answering emails during ASCSU meetings; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan probably holds the record for the most miles driven on behalf of the ASCSU; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan has a reputation for always sharing his food with his colleagues, even if it means occasionally spilling it on them; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan has served as the unofficial paparazzo of the ASCSU with camera always ready to provide a record of the body’s activities for posterity; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan has often rescued subsequent ASCSU secretaries by providing backup minutes through his meticulously prepared Campus Report; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan has introduced the term Bio-Break into the Lexicon of the,ASCSU; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan has provided senators with endless game show fun with his annual Guess the Senator Quiz that makes the ASCSU voting process seem almost tolerable; and

WHEREAS, John Tarjan has been a masterful quick change artist as he instantly changes from buttoned-down business professor/senator to Hawaiian-shirt wearing party-boy as soon as he hears the word “adjourned”; therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU express its deep gratitude to John Tarjan for his many years of commitment, leadership and service; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU recognize John Tarjan for his extraordinary commitment to higher education in the state of California; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU wish Jon Tarjan continued success as a key player in the  enterprise of shared governance in the California State University.
