RATIONALE: Current University of California Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White has been selected as the incoming seventh Chancellor of the CSU. Dr. White has served, among other roles, as Professor and Chair of the Departments of Human Biodynamics at the University of California Berkeley, and Movement Science at the University of Michigan; as Dean, Provost, Executive Vice President, and Interim President of Oregon State University; and as President of the University of Idaho. While serving as Chancellor of the University of California Riverside, he has been praised for the establishment of a School of Medicine and a School of Public Policy. Of particular note, as a first-generation college student, he matriculated from each segment of California’s system of higher education, specifically Diablo Valley Community College, Fresno State (bachelor’s degree), Cal State Hayward (East Bay, master’s degree), and UC Berkeley (Ph. D.). According to a press release from the Office of the Chancellor, the Chair of the Board of Trustees’ Selection Committee has noted that Timothy White’s “background and experience reflect the institutional values and mission of the CSU,” and “his demonstrated leadership and commitment to student success are the right combination for the university’s future.” Moreover, ASCSU Chair Guerin noted that during his interview for the position of CSU Chancellor, Timothy White conveyed optimism tempered with urgency, and articulated the view that shared governance (expressed as “shared leadership”) carries with it the notion of shared responsibility. Given his experience with all segments of California public higher education, and his intriguing notion of shared governance, the Academic Senate of the CSU looks forward to working with incoming Chancellor White to strengthen the working relationship between the Office of the Chancellor and faculty representatives, and to advance the mission of the CSU.
