Commendation of Dr. John R. (Dick) Montanari

WHEREAS, Dick Montanari has served on the Academic Senate of the California State
University (CSU) with distinction and integrity while ably and effectively
representing CSU, San Marcos for many years – seeming to rush by in hours or
drag along through decades depending on one’s viewpoint; and
WHEREAS, Dick Montanari was the first sitting chair of the Cal State San Marcos Academic
Senate to voluntarily serve a second consecutive term; and
WHEREAS, Dick Montanari has served with significant skill and patience as an active
member of the Fiscal and Governmental Affairs (FGA) Committee, contributing
well-written resolutions using an action-oriented process; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Dick Montanari is a great scholar and brilliant multi-tasker who can quickly
draft a resolution, while providing feedback, comments, and suggestions on yet
another resolution, and
WHEREAS, Dick Montanari has never seen a resolved clause that he did not want to improve;
and
WHEREAS, Dick Montanari has a well-earned reputation for savvy business knowledge,
detailed fiscal judgment, and a diplomatically-sharp wit; and
WHEREAS, Dick Montanari has time and again enhanced the breadth and quality of
committee and plenary deliberations with thoughtful devil’s or angel’s advocacy
from his ensconced seat in left field; and
WHEREAS, Whereas Dick Montanari has always been willing to ask the tough questions of
any administrator who happens to be in the room (or out of the room, for that
matter); therefore be it
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU congratulate Dick Montanari on his most
extraordinary combination of campus and system-wide jobs and roles, and thank
him for his dedication to shared governance and service in the Academic Senate
CSU; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU wish Dick Montanari the best in his impending
retirement, noting that his sense of optimism and many contributions to shared
governance and to the faculty and students of the CSU will truly be missed.
