Spring 2006 EAP in Mathematics Summary Results
Approximately, 134,000 (72%) of all high school juniors eligible to take the CST in mathematics opted to complete CSU's voluntary EAP in Mathematics in spring 2006. Slightly more than 55% were proficient in mathematics.
This represents an increase both in the number of students (from 119,000 in 2005) and percentage of students (69%) eligible to take the CST who volunteered for CSU's EAP in Mathematics in spring 2005. About 56% were declared proficient in 2005. The slight decrease in math proficiency is attributed to the significant increase in the number of students who elected to complete the voluntary EAP in Mathematics.
Spring 2006 EAP in English Summary Results
About 158,000 (38%) high school juniors completed the EAP in English, which requires students to complete an additional 15 objective questions and to write an essay that is read by CSU faculty. Of these students, 25% were proficient.
However, an additional 60,000 EAPs in English are still in the process of being scored. This delay in scoring some of the exams is due to some confusion concerning the test instructions that required students to indicate (by filling in a "bubble" on their essay booklet) that they had taken or intended to complete the multiple-choice questions. Initially, only essays by students who filled in the "bubble" were scored; when it was discovered that 60,000 booklets remained unread, the decision was made to re-examine all test booklets, and score any essays that had not been scored in the first round. CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed stated that "CSU believes it has a moral imperative to give all students every opportunity to demonstrate college readiness, and we are therefore ensuring that every EAP essay that was submitted by a student will be read and scored."
All essays that were not originally identified by processing based on the existence of the filled-in "bubble" on the booklets will now be read by CSU faculty members. Students whose essays are read in this round should receive their score reports in October.
Once these EAP's are added to those scored in the first round, it is expected that over 200,000 high school juniors will have taken the EAP in English, a significant increase above the 186,000 high school juniors who completed the EAP in English in 2005. The final proficiency rate of all students who completed the EAP in English will be announced in October, at which time it will be possible to provide a comparison with the performance of students who completed the EAP in English in spring 2005.
Changes to Spring 2007 EAP Processing
In order to prevent a repetition of this processing problem in 2007, the CSU is reconsidering its decision to require the student to fill in a "bubble" to guide the processing and grading of English EAP tests. Also-so that all students will have every opportunity to demonstrate their college readiness-- effective with the spring 2007 EAP test administration, all EAP English tests will be scored if the student has completed at least one multiple-choice question.
EAP 2006 Test Results Website
In an effort to respond to calls that EAP test results align better with those provided at the CDE website for presenting STAR results, the CSU has built a website for EAP results that uses the CDE STAR results website as the model. Along with providing information by county, by district, and by school, the enhanced EAP website now provides information (subject to privacy rules) by subgroups for the following:
- English Language Fluency;
- Economic Status;
- Parent Education;
- Ethnicity;
- Gender; and
- Disability
In addition, like the CDE website, members of the public as well as policy analysts may download data statewide, by county, by district, by school, and by subgroup.
