Intermediate French Sequence - TCSU FREN SEQ B
Description
Intermediate French is a multi-faceted program, including a focus on forms (grammar component), developing proficiency in writing, speaking, reading, and listening, increasing cultural awareness of the complexities of French and Francophone worlds. Students who successfully complete the sequence should be at ACTFL Intermediate-High in all four modalities.
Prerequisites
2nd semester French or equivalent
Minimum Unit Requirements
9 semester units
Course Topics
Must include but are not limited to:
1. An in-depth review of fundamental grammatical concepts and an introduction to more sophisticated grammatical patterns
2. Introduction to vocabulary necessary to successfully handle a variety of communicative tasks and social situations and a number of practical writing needs, such as writing letters and short essay topics
3. Discussions and analysis of French and Francophone cultures
4. Focus on a variety of writing styles such as letters, descriptions, narration, and analyses
5. Reading and analysis of French texts; access French language materials through the Internet for writing original papers
6. Discussions and written analysis of French and Francophone cultures
7. Oral communication and reading skills
8. Reading and analyze of French and Francophone texts, accessing French language materials through the Internet, and viewing French and Francophone film as a point of departure for discussion and oral presentations.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate skills in:
Listening:
a. sustain understanding over longer stretches of connected discourse on a number of topics pertaining to different times and places; however, understanding is inconsistent due to failure to grasp main ideas and/or details
Speaking:
a. converse with ease and confidence when dealing with most routine tasks and social situations, especially, in relation to work, school, recreation, interests and areas of competence, though hesitation & errors may be evident
b. narrate and describe in major time frames using connected paragraph length discourse, though speaker will exhibit one or more levels of breakdown in performance of Advanced-level tasks
c. ability to be understood by native speakers unaccustomed to dealing with non-natives
Reading:
a. able to read consistently with full understanding simple connected texts dealing with basic personal & social needs
b. able to read somewhat longer prose of several paragraphs in length, particularly if presented with a clear underlying structure & in familiar sentence patterns, gets main ideas but misses some facts
c. may have to read material several times for comprehension
Writing:
a. able to meet all practical writing needs, e.g., taking notes on familiar topics, writing uncomplicated letters, simple summaries, and compositions related to work, school experiences, & topics of current interest
b. able to write simple narrations and descriptions of paragraph length on everyday events and situations in different time frames, although with inaccuracies and inconsistencies
c. writing can be understood by native speakers not used to the writing on non-natives but gaps in comprehension may occur
Culture:
a. appreciation of the diversity of the Francophone world
b. recognition of key social and cultural traditions
c. understanding the norms, values, and beliefs of areas where the target language is used
d. ability to respond in culturally appropriate ways in a variety of situations in the target cultures
Critical Thinking:
a. make comparisons between home culture/s and French culture by analyzing a specific difference between home culture/s and French culture
b. make comparisons between home culture/s and Francophone cultures by analyzing a specific difference between home culture/s and French culture
c. demonstrate knowledge of the diversity of French nation through written discussion of an aspect of contemporary France
d. analyze an aspect of a short story read in the language
