Child, Family and Society - TCSU FDEV 110

Description

This course is a broad survey of environmental influences on children and families. Core components include historical and contemporary perspectives on children, family and social structures; child, family and social relationships and the interaction among these systems; influences of age, gender, diverse abilities, culture, race, ethnicity, socio-economic and public policy factors; and community resources available to support family systems.

Minimum Unit Requirements

3 semester units

Course Topics

1. Historical and contemporary perspective on children, family and social structures;
2. A systems approach to understanding social relationships and interactions;
3. Individual and family differences, communication patterns and strategies;
4. The family as socializing agent;
5. The effects of socioeconomics and public policy on children and families;
6. Communication
7. Community resources that support family systems

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Analyze theories of socialization and their explanation of the interrelationship of family and society on children.
2. Examine and critically evaluate the effects of age, gender, diverse abilities, cultures, race, ethnicity, socio-economic and public policy on child and family.
3. Examine and recognize diverse familial and social communication patterns and styles and implement positive communication strategies that support all families.
4. Synthesize and analyze research regarding social issues and change and evaluate current impact on children, families, schools, and communities.
5. Examine community support services and agencies that are available to community and families.
6. Develop advocacy strategies to change attitudes and public policy on behalf of children and families.
