Comparative survey of the historical experience of Asians in the United States.

Course Topics

Historical comparison of API groups regarding:
1. Immigration and exclusion
2. Settlement patterns
3. Adaptation
4. Limited access to social political and economic institutions
5. Discrimination and resistance
6. Identity
7. Stereotypes/racism
8. Gender and sexuality

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Critically analyze and interpret the historical context in which Asian immigration and settlement took place;
2. Describe the major historical events having to do with Asian immigration, settlement and adaptation;
3. Compare and contrast the experience of Asians in the U.S. with regard to topics such as racism, adaptation, resistance, gender and sexuality; and
4. Explain Asian American achievements and contributions to the U.S.
