Introduction to Drawing - TCSU ART 210
Description
Introduction to observational drawing and composition to develop the ability to perceive and define shape, contour, volume, space, and light using a variety of drawing media and subject matter. Emphasis is on clarity of observation and the ability to order and translate 3-dimensional form and space into 2-dimensional drawings.
Minimum Unit Requirements
3 semester units (a minimum of 6 contact hours per week is expected)
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be competent in the application of a variety of drawing media in the following areas:
Measuring
a. The ability to identify visual relationships that help determine scale/proportions.
b. An understanding of how size and scale function within a spatial context.
c. The ability to translate these relationships from 3D to 2D.
Perspective
a. An understanding of visual perspective systems.
b. The ability to create a convincing two-point perspective oriented drawing.
c. An understanding of, and an ability to draw a proper ellipse.
d. An understanding of foreshortening.
e. The ability to use perspective conceptually in creating artwork.

b. The ability to describe form with line, implying three dimensions.
c. The ability to develop relationships between form and space.
d. An appreciation of line in (personal) visual expression.
Composition
a. An understanding of the need to selectively design a 2D piece of art.
b. The ability to use spatial relationships in composition.
c. The ability to use all the elements of drawing—from perspective to choice of media—in determining composition using an approach that is informed, creative, and inventive.
Value
a. Technical control in developing value and tone.
b. An understanding of the aesthetic quality of tonal drawing (cross-hatching, mark making, etc.).
c. An understanding of the tonal possibilities inherent in the media.
