Survey of Art History from the Renaissance to the Present - TCSU ART 120

Description

A broad overview of western art and architecture from the 1400s through the 1900s that also may include some consideration of art of the twenty-first century. Although European art will be emphasized for the period prior to 1800, art produced in the Americas after 1600 also will be included. In addition, some attention will be given to the influence that art and architecture from other cultures and regions had on western art.

Recommended Preparation

Survey of Art History from Prehistoric Through Medieval Periods (note: this may be a required prerequisite in some programs)

Minimum Unit Requirements

3 semester units (a minimum of 3 contact hours per week is expected)

Course Topics

1. Presentation of representative examples of Renaissance through Contemporary art in context, with a consideration of the factors that influenced their design, construction, appearance, and, in the case of images and other pictorial works, subjects.
2. Discussion of the relationships between different artistic styles, including the influence of one region, era, or artist on another.
3. Introduction of basic methods/approaches used in art historical analysis.
4. Written assignments will include exam essays in class and/or short papers outside class (such as: research papers, response papers, journals).
5. Where local resources permit, art museum or gallery visits should be encouraged and may be the basis of written exercises in which students discuss and analyze works of art.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Recognize representative monuments of architecture, sculpture, painting, and other artistic media from the fifteenth through the twentieth century;
2. Discuss the work and ideas of principal artists from these eras;
3. Both identify and explain significant features of works by these artists, using the appropriate art historical vocabulary;
4. Discuss the larger historic context for the works of art (and, for the 19th through the 20th centuries, of the artistic movements that are associated with them); and
5. Recognize the relationship between the different artistic styles and movements covered in the course.
