Survey of Art History from Prehistoric through Medieval Periods - TCSU ART 110

Description

A broad overview of Prehistoric, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Early Christian, Islamic, and Medieval art and architecture.

Minimum Unit Requirements

3 semester units (a minimum of 3 contact hours per week is expected)

Course Topics

1. Presentation of representative examples of Ancient and Medieval art in context, with a consideration of the factors that influenced their design, construction, appearance, and, in the case of images and other pictorial works, subjects.
2. Discussion of the relationships between different historic styles, including the influence of one region or era on another.
3. Introduction of basic methods/approaches used in art historical analysis.
4. Written assignments will include exam essays in class and/or short papers outside class (such as: research papers, response papers, journals).
5. Where local resources permit, art museum visits should be encouraged and may be the basis of written exercises in which students discuss and analyze works of art.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Recognize representative monuments of architecture, sculpture, and painting from Antiquity through the end of the Middle Ages;
2. Both identify and explain the principal features of these monuments, using the appropriate art historical vocabulary;
3. Discuss relevant aspects of the historic context for most of these monuments; and
4. Discuss the significance many of these monuments (or the historic styles they represent) had for later eras.
