PHAROS Graphic PHAROS User Interface
Setup Guide
v3.3 September 21, 1999

The following are suggested areas of customization to the user interface of PHAROS 1.0 as shipped. While Pharos is designed to be configurable for the resources and services at the individual campus, it is important that it be recognizable as a CSU systemwide library service with a look and feel familiar to students and faculty across the CSU.

Marvin Pollard will be providing assistance in the local configuration of the Pharos 1.0 screens. This information is provided to CSU library staff to initiate the decision making process that is part of the initial set up Pharos.

Note: when editing files used in Pharos always use a text editor, such as Notepad or Wordpad. Files must be saved as text files, but the file extensions must remain unchanged. For example: template files have the naming convention Long.tem

A. Quick Search Page Setup:

This section if based upon the following page:

     http://Pharos.calstate.edu/

[Authentication required: User ID = 111111111 Last Name = Test

A1. Customize the Banner.
You may replace the file placeholder.jpg, (it has the "CSU" logo) which appears on the right of main banner files, with your own (such as as campus or library) logo. The placeholder.jpg file is 50 pixels high by 90 pixels wide.  Pharos uses this image as a navigation device. When a Pharos user traverses a link; 856 url or Web-pass through search, to another web site, using Netscape Navigator, he or she can click on this image to immediately return to the screen in Pharos that he or she used as a launching point.

Implementation: Edit the HTML in banner.shtml, which you will find in D:\Webpac1.3. Your own logo file should reside in the D:\Webpac1.3\Images\banner folder.
A2. Choose an Exit destination.
Choose an [exit] destination that the user will be taken to when the [exit] link on the top banner is clicked. Most libraries choose their home page
Implementation: Modify the HTML of banner.shtml to include a link to the URL of your chosen exit destination.

 <td width="45"><a href="http://uias.calstate.edu/uias.shtml"  target="_top" onmouseover="swtch('3','exit')" onmouseout="restoreImage('exit','images/banner/e_off.gif');"><img src="images/banner/e_off.gif" name="exit" alt="Click here to go to the UIAS Web Site" border="0" WIDTH="45" HEIGHT="20"></a></td>

A3.  Choose Information Resources for "All Databases and Library Catalogs"
Change the listing of databases on the page all_databases.shtml to match those proprietary databases accessible to your campus community. This is meant to be listing of all of the resources you wish to include in your PHAROS universe. These can be both Z39.50 services and non Z39.50 services. This can also include library catalogs: individual CSUs, the union catalog, and Z39.50 compliant library catalogs outside of the CSU.

Libraries will want to identify which of their licensed databases are available via Z39.50.

Click here for the list of databases currently available in Pharos.

A list of OCLC's FirstSearch databases available via Z39.50 can be found at: http://www.oclc.org/oclc/man/z39.50/database.shtml

Siliverplatter has a list of databases available via Z39.50 at [This link is not available 9/21/1999]: http://www-lon.silverplatter.com/~denisl/z3950-fieldinfo/

EBSCO, IAC, OVID as well as many libraries also offer Z39.50 access to their databases. Coming Soon: Encyclopedia Britannica plans to offer Z39.50 access to EB Online.

The Library of Congress is the Maintenance Agency for Z39.50. Visit the Z39.50 Home page at: http://lcweb.loc.gov/z3950/agency/

Implementation: Modify the HTML of all_databases.shtml as appropriate. You will find all_databases.shtml in the D:\Webpac1.3 folder. See: A-15 Remote Patron Authentication.
A4.  Choose Information Resources for "Quick Search".

4a. Decide on which databases (these must be Z39.50 services) are to be searched (and in what order) when a user selects the default "Quick Search". Which few select electronic resources are best for this "quick and dirty" search?  We recommend 2-5 sources, including your local catalog and a few interdisciplinary databases. [note: support for non Z39.50 sources is expected to be available later.]

Implementation: Change the default databases listed in menu.shtml, which you will find in the D:\Webpac1.3 folder.

Example:

<INPUT TYPE="hidden" NAME="SCMD" VALUE="new -broadcast -access sacramento,,academicft,,ebsco,,articlefirst">

A4b.  Depending on the databases you chose for 4a above, you may wish to modify the explanatory text on the Quick search page. The default reads: "Find books, articles, web sites, etc."
Implementation: Change the HTML text in menu.shtml, which you will find in the D:\Webpac1.3 folder.

Example:

Unless you change the default settings, Pharos Quick search will look for books, articles, and Web sites in Journal Access Core Collection, JACC Online, EUREKA, InfoTrac Expanded Academic, and FirstSearch Article 1st.";

A5. Choose Information Resources for "Databases" Search.
Decide on which databases (and in what order) are to be searched in the "Databases" option under "Select One... "  This search is intended for the most heavily used Z39.50 sources; this can be used by advanced searchers.
Implementation: Change the HTML text in menu.shtml, which you will find in the D:\Webpac1.3 folder.

Example:

<SELECT NAME="D1" onFocus="this.form.R1[1].checked=1;">
<OPTION value="http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=q&kl=XX&search=Search&q=">Alta Vista&nbsp;</OPTION>

A7. Help Text in Pop ups.
Review the text of the Javascript based pop ups that appear when the information icons Question mark are clicked. The pop ups have a limitation of 255 characters. [Note:  popups can be disabled if you wish to accommodate lower version browsers]
Implementation: Edit the javascript text that appear in menu.shtml, which you will find in the D:\Webpac1.3 folder. There are 6 different Popup Help screens

  Example:

else if (code == 3) msg = "Quick Search simultaneously searches Journal Access Core Collection, JACC Online, EUREKA, InfoTrac, and FirstSearch Article 1st.";

A8. Help Text in the help files..
In addition to the text in the pop ups (see number 7, above) there are several help files linked from the left column:

filename Content
about.shtml About PHAROS, FAQ, NEWS
tips.shtml Tips for finding books, articles, and web sites
pharostour.shtml Interactive Tour of PHAROS
help.shtml WebPAC searching screens

You may wish to edit these as desired.

Implementation: Change the HTML text in the files as needed.
A9. Subject Areas.
Review the Subject areas in the left column. The left column of the Quick Search page may require some editing: Of the "Subject Areas", only the Business link is installed. It leads to business.shtml, which then branches out to other business related pages. business.shtml and these other pages are intended as a example of what can be done with a subject area page. Other subject areas do not lead to anything at this time. Any or all of the subject area links can be removed from user view as desired.
Implementation: Edit the HTML text on Business.shtml. An easy way to do this and to preserve the text for future use is to turn the text into comments: place <!-- before the text string and --> at the end of the text string.
A10. The "Ask A Librarian" link. and The "Write Us" link
Both of these text items can be edited for local preferences.  Either of these could be used to link to a page or be a "mailto" link.  Some suggested uses:

a. The "Ask A Librarian" link could be used to link to a page that describes other user options for help (local phone numbers, ref desk, list of subject specialists, etc.)  If you have it link to a pre-existing page, you may  wish to edit that page to include a "PHAROS" or "return to PHAROS" link.

b. The "Write Us" link could be used as a "mailto" link to the Pharos
Liaison for your campus.

Implementation: Change the HTML text in menu.shtml, which you will find in the D:\webpac1.3 folder.
A11. Call number Display in Brief Displays
In Library Catalog searches, the brief display is set to not display the call numbers.  Call number display can produce too lengthy a display if there are multiple call numbers for the same item.  This option can be modified to each library catalog you would like.  Please contact Marvin Pollard to make arrangements for this change. Note the Union Catalog does NOT display call numbers.
Implementation: Call marvin to discuss changes to the display of information in the Brief display.
A12. Integrate local web pages
These can be locally mounted guides to research, including Information Competence modules as needed.
Implementation: Check with Marvin. Adding links to existing Information Competence pages is relatively easy to do in any Pharos pages.
These can be locally mounted guides to research, including Information Competence modules as needed.

A13. Search Argument "Pass through" to Web sources
At the bottom of the search result pages for "no hits", "broadcast search results" and "full view", four pull down options are offered:

<Web search Engines and Catalogs>
<Search Reference Materials>
<Search Book Stores>
<Search News & Health Sites>
When the user selects one of these options, the search argument is passed onto the external web site and the web site performs the search. You may totally delete this feature or modify the lists of sites (and in what order they appear) as you wish.

Implementation: Check with Marvin. This involves editing the broadcastresults.tem, brief.tem, long.tem, artlong.tem, error.tem files. These files contain sensitive javascript calls. .

A14. If you don't enable RSS services. If you have not implemented RSS features, the link in the banner from the graphic for "Item Requests" will be changed to link to nothing. The mouse over will be changed to indicate Available in the Future.  PHAROS comes configured to link to item_requests.shtml, which starts the process of requesting an item.

Implementation: Check with Marvin. This involves editing the  long.tem, artlong.tem files. These files contain sensitive javascript calls.
A15. Remote Patron Authentication

The Pharos Authentication system interoperates with your library's online system patron database. Users who have had their information loaded or manually entered into your local system and who do not have a blocked status will be authorized to use licensed databases and , when your library makes this service available, create requests for loans and copies of materials available from other libraries and document fulfillment services.

The text on the authentication screen is customizable for your library. The data entry fields depend, to a degree, on the type of local system your library uses.

If Quick Search includes licensed databases, then this screen will need to be protected. RPA will be configured so that ranges of IP addresses used in the library or on the campus avoid the necessity of authenticating when using licensed resources. Requesting items, however, will always invoke the authentication challege.

Implementation: Check with Marvin. This involves creating and editing the  RPA resource files. The URL needs to be changed to point to your Pharos Server. Z39.50 resources will have Pharos URLs. HTTP Resources will have a variety of URLs.
These files are located in the D:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\cgi-bin\config directory.
There is one file for each database that RPA controls.

Example:

VALID_PATRON = [http://Pharos.calstate.edu:5080/webpac/wgbroker.exe?new+-access+top.ebsco]

RESOURCE_DESCRIPTION = [EBSCO Academic Search Elite]

VALID_IP_LIST = [134.139.54.2-256,134.139.55.2-256,134.139.56.2-256,134.139.57.2-256,134.139.58.2-256,134.139.59.2-256,]
