Enhancement Subcommittee Report by Kelley

1.RSS Testing Overview

(Refer to Enhancement List "M" and Bug Report "S")

Since the June 20th ICS meeting, the enhancement group has done testing for 20 outstanding bugs reported as fixed by epixtech and has checked off on 14 of them.33 new problems have been reported bringing the Bug Report to 142 items. This latest testing phase involved 250 emails among the enhancement group, epixtech personnel and Marvin, 10 conference calls, and numerous informal calls. For the 60-day work period, this averages to 4 emails exchange per day and more than 1 conference call per week.

Some problems which have delayed testing have been the inability to complete configuration of Fullerton's machines and viruses found on the Chico and Fullerton servers. The most significant development has been that OCLC transfer from RSS is now working with only minor problems to be resolved. No progress has been made on statistical reports (originally promised in the August 1999 build).

2. Required for Pilot Items (Refer to Kelley's 9/6 email)

Epixtech has asked us to revisit what features and bugs are required for a CSU RSS pilot program. The enhancement group with Marvin and Kathleen drafted recommendations which were presented to the task force with several items for discussion. Some of the criteria used were whether the feature would be used in the pilot project and the frequency of occurrence (for bugs). The task force consensus was to accept the recommendations and to include the discussion items from the Enhancement List in the required list. Kelley will compile the completed list for forwarding to epixtech.

3. Patron Blocking

Task force members were asked to bring to the conference call their campuses' preferences for determining eligibility of patrons to use ILL. The enhancement group is compiling a list of blocking criteria to provide to epixtech. ICS asked Kelley to send an email to the CSUILL listserve to collect more ideas. The blocks discussed included patron status, patron record expiration dates, fines, request limits, overdue materials, and manual blocks. Rhonda asked whether ICS should consider recommending standards for patron blocks for CSU implementation. Kathleen will add this to the next agenda.

Task Force Discussions:

Statistics: Task Force Members discussed the importance of the statistics package as a vital selling point to the ILL Offices. It was noted that most ILL Offices now are using manual statistics in anticipation of the RSS Statistics package. Some members voiced their concern as to epixtech’s ability to include stats in the package as part of the implementation and shouldn’t we just concentrate on the functionality of the functions rather than insist on statistics and risk another delay in the process. Epixtech is aware that this is part of the package that we need for implementation and that they were given stats features months ago, now they claim it could be a problem, but if we tell them we don’t need stats we might end up not having any kind of statistics.

Patron Blocking Report: Epixtech to configure, based on a list of “blocks” submitted. Should blocks be campus wide or system wide. Kelly will query people on the listserve for reasons in denying ILL service to patrons.

Web Interface Report: Jo Ann reported on the status of the RSS and OCLC fields. Waiting for User Task Force action on labels to be used in the forms. Wait for demo to walk through a simulation. No report on reviews prompts and buttons. Can a plain article form for people to fill in to dump to OCLC be turned on even if unmediated article form is unavailable.

Email Address on the forms: Can it be directed elsewhere if student default email address is different from the one they prefer. Can a button be pushed for address also if the one RPA shows is wrong.

A Meeting at the Chancellor’s Office in Long Beach has been scheduled for Nov. 3rd with representatives from the Mgmt Team observing a demo of the RSS. The meeting is expected to be RSS demo in the morning starting at about 9:30 – 11:30. And ICS business meeting will be in the afternoon.
