Teacher Scholarships and Loan Cancellation Programs
Assumption Program of Loans for Education-APLE (Up to between $11,000 and $19,000)
APLE is a competitive teacher incentive program designed to encourage outstanding students to become California teachers in subject areas where a critical teacher shortage has been identified or in designated schools meeting specific criteria. Up to between $11,000 and $19,000 in outstanding educational loan balances can be paid by the California Student Aid Commission in return for four consecutive years of teaching service in one of the following teacher shortage areas.
* Mathematics (Grades 7 - 12)
* Science (Life/Physical) (Grades 7 - 12)
* Foreign Language
* Special Education
* Low-Income Area School
* School Serving Rural Area
* State Special School
* School with a High Percentage of Emergency Permit Teachers
Amounts above $11,000 are associated with teaching of mathematics, science and special education in the highest need schools.

Federal Perkins Loan Teacher Cancellation
The Federal Perkins Loan Teacher Cancellation program applies to teachers who have taught in an elementary or secondary school as a:
--teacher in a school serving students from low-income families
--special education teacher
--teacher in the fields of mathematics, science, foreign languages, or bilingual education, or in other shortage areas in the state.
If a borrower is eligible for teacher cancellation under any of the categories, up to 100 percent of the loan may be canceled for teaching service in the following increments:
--15% for the first and year second years of service
--20 percent canceled for the third and fourth years
--30 percent canceled for the fifth year.

Federal Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program - FFEL and Direct Loan Programs
To qualify, a teacher must have been employed as a full-time teacher for five consecutive complete academic years in an elementary or secondary school that has been designated as a low-income school by the U.S. Department of Education. Teachers may receive up to either $5,000 or $17,500 of loan cancellation if they teach in a low-income school.
A fully qualified elementary or secondary teacher is eligible for up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness if they teach in a low-income school.
Teachers may receive up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness if they are fully qualified and are:
--teachers of mathematics or science in an eligible secondary school
--special education teachers.

Robert Noyce Scholarship Program
The Robert Noyce Scholarship Program seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science teachers. Each Noyce Scholar can receive up to two years of scholarships with stipends of up to $10,000 per year. Preference is given to students seeking a single subject credential in mathematics or science who might otherwise not have considered the teaching profession, particularly individuals with high academic achievement and financial need who are from underrepresented groups.
