4053 PREVENTION/INVESTIGATION OFFICERS

The Prevention/Investigation Officer classification was recommended by the
Public Safety Advisory Committee in its 1976 report. At that time, most
serious criminal investigations of campus crimes were conducted by the
neighboring municipal jurisdictions. In l978-79, staffing of Investigators
began to take place throughout the system, and the campuses gradually
became able to take over the total investigative function.

The Prevention/Investigation Officer is especially trained to analyze factors
contributing to victimization of the campus community and to pursue
investigative functions relative to criminal activity. Investigators also may
have responsibility for crime prevention in addition to their investigative
duties. Presently, on most CSU campuses, Investigators orient new faculty,
staff, and students to the mission of the campus Public Safety department and
maintain the awareness level of the existing community. Information and
crime bulletins are distributed regularly and are augmented by community-
awareness presentations.
