4051.01 PEACE OFFICER STANDARDS AND TRAINING (POST)
PROGRAM

The CSU adheres to the regulations and standards of the California
Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) for the
employment and training of Public Safety Officers. POST guidelines require
physical and psychological examinations, a complete medical examination,
and a complete background investigation prior to employment.

Basic Police Academy training requires 800 hours; Advanced Officer Training
24 to 40 hours every two years. However, the Public Safety approach calls for
campus Officers to go beyond the general law-enforcement techniques similar
to city or county personnel. To meet the demands of this additional
responsibility, training beyond that required by POST is provided. First aid
and CPR training are mandatory, as is regular training on the moral and legal
aspects of firearms as well as shooting ability. Disaster response training, such
as to hazardous substance incidents also is given.

The lists of training courses shown in Appendices BA 4903-PS and BA 4904-
PS will give an idea of the considerable amount of training Officers may
attend.

Appendix BA 4903-PS lists some POST-approved continual professional
training courses designed to keep Peace Officers and others informed of new
laws, new concepts in law enforcement, technology, community relations,
and other refresher training.

Appendix 4904-PS lists some additional training resources available to CSU
Public Safety personnel.
