3726.04  PELL GRANT (BEOG) PROGRAM, NO. 948/408

The Basic Educational Opportunity Grant Program was authorized as part of 
the 1972 amendments to the Higher Educational Act of 1965.  In 1980 the 
program was renamed the Pell Grant Program in honor of Senator Claiborne 
Pell.  The purpose of the Program is to award grants to financially needy 
students in order to meet the costs of postsecondary education.

The program is administered under Title 34 of the Code of Federal 
Regulations, Part 690, and is currently the largest student grant program 
administered by the Department of Education.
