3726.02  NATIONAL DEFENSE/DIRECT STUDENT LOAN (PERKINS) 
PROGRAM, NO. 948/403

The Perkins Loan Program is a federal program with a match requirement 
that provides long-term, low-interest loans for educational costs to students 
with demonstrated financial need.  It is currently authorized under Title IV-E 
of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended by the Higher Education 
Amendments of 1986.  Annual award letter United States Department of

This program is a continuation of the National Direct/Defense Student Loan 
Program (NDSL) which was originally authorized under Title II of the 
National Defense Education Act of 1958.  The participating institution must 
contribute to the loan fund an amount that is not less than one-ninth of the 
federal funds received.
