3726.01 SUPPLEMENTAL (FEDERAL) EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY
GRANT (SEOG) PROGRAM, NO. 948/401

The Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Program is a federal
program that provides grants to students with exceptional financial need
who, without such assistance, would be unable to pursue a postsecondary
education.

The SEOG Program was first authorized by the 1972 Amendments to the
Higher Education Act of 1965. It was not a continuation of the forerunner
Federal Educational Opportunity Grant (EOG), but an entirely new program
established to supplement the Pell (Basic) Grant Program, which also was
authorized by the 1972 Amendments. Copies of the Act can be obtained
through the National Association of Financial Aid Administration
(NASFAA): No. 135, The Authorization of Higher Education Act of 1965---
October 1986. Annual award letter United State Department of Education.
