2801.04 PELL GRANTS

Originally the Pell Grant Program was entitled the Basic Educational
Opportunity Grant (BEOG) Program. BEOG was authorized in 1972 as part of
the 1972 Amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965. The Educational
Amendments of 1980 changed the name of the Basic Grant Program to the
Pell Grant Program in honor of Senator Claiborne Pell.

The Pell Grant Program is administered by the Department of Education, not
the campus.

The purpose of the Pell Grant Program is to help financially needy students
meet the costs of postsecondary education.
