"In Fall 1986 the EOP Office at CSU
Chico gave me the opportunity to attend college.
They required me to meet with my academic advisor several
times a semester. At this point this was exactly what
I needed because I still did not have the study skills
to academically succeed. Along with providing academic
advice the office also served as an excellent support
system for me as well. After receiving my bachelor’s
and master’s degrees, I started the Education, Culture
and Society Ph.D. Program at the University of Utah. I
attend graduate seminars with colleagues who hold master’s
degrees from UCLA, Georgetown, Stanford, Harvard, University
of Illinois, and many other top colleges in the U.S. To
my surprise I was not an average Ph.D. student. Instead,
I was commonly the top student in every class. In spring
2004 I will graduate with my Ph.D. in Education. Throughout
this process I have still have maintained the friendships
with the CSU Chico EOP academic advisors. The point of
this letter is not show the success I have had academically.
Instead, this letter is written to show that importance
of academic programs such as EOP. Special services offices
such as EOP are needed because they find students who
are 'diamonds in the rough,' and then provide them an
opportunity to attend college. I can simply tell you that
programs like EOP change lives. It did mine."
