wonderful opportunity for learning and networking
through various concurrent breakout sessions and
keynote speakers.
Session
tracks will provide a forum for campuses to share
information and experiences in improving administrative
efficiency, effectiveness, and service in areas
such as student administration, finance, and human
resources; participants will also have the opportunity
to learn how campuses are maximizing and extending
the capabilities of CSU administrative systems.
Sessions will also focus on campus experiences with
accreditation and assessment, as well as the implementation
of quality frameworks and initiatives. Session tracks
will include:
-
Administrative
Service, Effectiveness, and Quality
-
Campus Life: Assessment and Student Affairs
-
WASC: Responding to the New Accreditation Model
-
Quality Improvement Methods and Tools
Lynne
Lancaster, best-selling author and expert on workplace
and social trends, and Don Kassing, the president
of San José State University, have been selected
as keynote speakers for this event.
A sought-after expert on workplace and social trends,
Lynne Lancaster has been a guest commentator on
CNN, CNBC, and National Public Radio. Her by-line
has appeared in numerous publications such as The
Futurist and Nation's Business, and she has been
interviewed in a wide range of national publications
including the Wall Street Journal, TIME magazine,
the Los Angeles Times, Success magazine, and the
Washington Post.
Lancaster is co-author of the best-selling business
book When Generations Collide—a consistent
favorite among CEOs—and she advises leaders,
managers, and employees alike on how to conduct
business more successfully. A summa cum laude graduate
of the University of Minnesota, she is an engaging,
informed, and entertaining speaker.
Under President Don Kassing’s leadership,
San José State has embarked on a university-wide
strategic planning process that articulates a shared
vision and includes goals, implementation plans,
and scorecards. This culture of evidence helps drive
improvement actions in areas related to student
learning, student life, and graduation rates. The
campus utilizes the various administrative systems
to produce their scorecards.
Past attendees have included system executives;
university presidents and vice presidents; finance
and human resource directors and managers; public
safety, risk management, and parking administrators;
procurement officers; institutional research directors;
student health and services professionals; and auxiliary
organization managers—all those at the system
and campus levels who are dedicated to quality improvement,
streamlining processes, and getting results. The
symposium also draws participation from universities
and colleges around the western region.

Quality Improvement Surveys Updated to Support Assessment Efforts |
| |
Systemwide
Quality Improvement Web-based surveys provide an effective
and low-cost method for annually soliciting feedback from
students, faculty, and staff on their needs, satisfaction,
and priorities for various services.
Many
of the current customer satisfaction surveys administered
through the Systemwide Quality Improvement Program have
been utilized since 2001 and in some cases since 2000.
While some of the surveys have been updated over the years,
this year Systemwide QI has undertaken an effort to review
the survey instruments. Full

Utilizing
Effective Measures
by
Mishelle Laws
Mishelle is the Assistant Vice President for Quality Improvement
at CSU Long Beach |
| |
| We’ve
all heard of the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable,
Relevant, and Time Based) approach for identifying good
objectives. But is there a handy acronym for developing
useful measures? Once you’ve got SMART objectives,
how do you identify effective measures that will accurately
track progress toward your objectives?
In
an effort to learn from each other, we have selected a few
CSU measures to profile in this edition. Even if the specific
measure does not apply to your campus, the fundamentals
of creating useful measures remain the same. Full
