May Web Seminar Series a Success

This year, the Quality Improvement Programs offered a Web seminar series covering current topics in Quality Improvement in the California State University and higher education. The seminars were initially presented in May using multimedia and interactive distance learning technology, allowing the Quality Improvement Programs to offer valuable training and information to faculty and staff across the state without the burden of travel time or expense. Posting the series on the Web allows campuses to visit and view at their convenience, and also to review presentations if necessary.

Speakers in the May series included:

  • CSU Chancellor Charles Reed and Chancellor Bob Hemenway of the University of Kansas
  • Matt Ceppi, Acting Manager, Quality Improvement Programs, who presented an introduction to Quality Improvement in the CSU
  • Ralph Wolff, Executive Director, Western Association for Schools and Colleges, who spoke on “Moving Beyond Compliance to a Systems Approach to Quality: Early Reflections on the New WASC Accreditation Model”
  • Phil Hart, Executive Vice President and COO, Lockheed Federal Credit Union, who spoke about the credit union's implementation of the Balanced Scorecard
  • Howard Lutwack, Director of Internal Audit, CSU Northridge, who spoke about CSU Northridge’s “College Review,” which reviews administrative procedures and internal controls at the college level

Participation in the series has been excellent and evaluations of the series have been positive. In May, site connections to the live broadcast reached 125, and archive viewings of the series number 330 to date. Archives of the series are available on the Quality Improvement website.

Future Web seminars will be available on a quarterly basis. Possible topics include: Customer Satisfaction Surveys – Using Data for Improvement, Student Affairs – Assessment, and WASC – Using Measures for Improvement.
