California State University Campuses Earn Green Practice Awards
Sustainability projects on four CSU campuses held up as models for California’s public
universities and colleges.
(June 4, 2009) –A rainforest on a CSU campus, sustainable building designs, and student-led energy audits are among the projects to be honored with an Energy Efficiency Partnership Best Practice Award during the 8th Annual UC/ CSU/ CCC Sustainability Conference, to be held June 21-24 at UC Santa Barbara.
“California’s public colleges and universities are the laboratories for green building, energy efficiency and sustainable living. We are paving the way for a better future by using the earth’s limited resources wisely and training the ‘green-collar’ workforce of the future,” said Warren Jacobs, university architect at the CSU Office of the Chancellor.
CSU Honorees:
- Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
- Center for Sciences – Best Overall Sustainable Design
- Green Campus Program – Student Energy Efficiency
- Demonstration Projects – Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) Design and Retrofit
- Demonstration Projects – Lighting Design and Retrofit
- Cal State Northridge
- Subtropical Rainforest – Student Sustainability
- Cal State San Bernardino
- Chemical Sciences – Monitoring Based Commissioning
- Humboldt State
- Green Campus Program – Student Energy Efficiency (honorable mention)
Other campuses receiving recognition are UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Merced, UC San Diego and UC San Francisco.
This year’s Sustainability Conference will be hosted by UC Santa Barbara. Students, staff, faculty and administrators from throughout the state’s higher education systems will explore ways to create social, environmental, and economic sustainability on campuses statewide.
