CSU FUNDING
External Funding 2003-2004
The CSU received nearly $284 million in philanthropic support in 2003-04.
This voluntary support includes gifts and pledges fro m alumni, parents,
corporations, foundations and other organizations and individuals. Although
a strong showing of support, it also represents a decline from the previous
year, reflecting an uncertain state and national economy.
CSU campuses also raised additional funds through operating grants and
contracts totaling more than $1 billion. The total external funding for the
CSU in 2003-04 was nearly $1.3 billion.

The CSU is raising about one dollar from external funding for every three
dollars of state support. The $1.3 billion raised by the campuses also exceeds
the total the CSU collected from student fees in 2003-04.
In the early 1990s, the CSU Trustees encouraged campuses to increase their
efforts in fundraising. As a result, voluntary support has climbed steadily
in the last decade, alumni membership has reached 113,000, and campus
endowments have risen to total $621 million.
