Will ITL cover my travel expenses?
ITL is pleased to provide partial travel support for CSU faculty attending the Teacher-Scholar Summer Institute. ITL will transfer funds to the campuses to help
defray the cost of lodging. In addition, for faculty coming from particularly distant areas, ITL will partially support airfare or other transportation costs in excess of $200. To be assured of travel support, participants should apply by the April 12 deadline.
All participants will be responsible for making and guaranteeing their room reservations. We have arranged with the West Coast Long Beach Hotel to set aside blocks of rooms at special conference rates:
West Coast Long Beach Hotel
700 Queensway Drive
Long Beach, CA 90802
(562) 435-7676
(562) 435-3788 fax
Participants must make their own travel arrangements following their own campus procedures for securing permission to travel on state business and for filing travel claim forms after the institute.
Participants will file all travel claims on their own campus, not with ITL, and should coordinate their travel claims with their campus faculty development center. Information on all campus faculty development centers is available at
http://www.calstate.edu/itl/FacDevCoun.shtml.
How much of the lodging costs will ITL reimburse?
ITL will provide a lodging subsidy of $100 per night for participants whose campuses are more than 25 miles from the Office of the Chancellor. To calculate the maximum number
of nights for which you will be eligible, count the number of days you
are in workshops and add one. For example, those enrolled in workshops during three days will be eligible for a maximum of four nights' lodging.
ITL cannot provide hotel or travel support for participants at campuses within 25 miles of the Office of the Chancellor: CSU Dominguez Hills, CSU Long Beach, and CSU Los Angeles.
What about airfare and other transportation expenses?
ITL will provide some support for transportation costs (mileage, airfare, airport parking, train fare) when
- those costs exceed $200,
- the traveler uses the lowest fares, and
- the traveler departs from his or her home or campus base.
ITL will not provide travel support for faculty whose travel
expenses are $200 or less. If you know that your transportation costs will exceed $200, please send a
supplemental travel request
to Dawn Wheeler, ITL Administrative Assistant, at
dwheeler@calstate.edu.
In that request, provide details of your expected expenditures for transportation. ITL will not reimburse for meals en route, incidentals, registration fees, and other travel expenses. To be considered for this support, your supplemental travel request must be received by May 4, 2003.
Will my campus cover expenses that ITL doesn't?
Many campuses have funds to reimburse other Teacher-Scholar Summer Institute travel
expenses (registration fees, meals en route, incidentals, the first $200 in transportation
costs, etc.). Please contact the Faculty Development Council representative on your campus to ask about campus support (a list of all campus
FDC representatives is available on our website). Also, ask your department chair and dean about additional travel funds available for the 2002-2003 fiscal year.
Are lecturers entitled to this travel support?
Yes, faculty in lecturer (temporary) or part-time appointments may receive travel support
from ITL provided they teach courses in the CSU on a regular basis (every quarter or
semester) and are eligible for travel support from the campus. Lecturers who teach only occasionally and graduate teaching assistants unfortunately are not eligible for travel
support from ITL, but they may apply to attend a TSSI workshop on a space-available basis.
Who can answer my questions about travel support?
Please contact ITL Administrative Assistant Dawn Wheeler if you have questions about
any of these policies and procedures. She can be reached at (562) 951-4736 or by email
(dwheeler@calstate.edu).
How do I apply for TSSI 2003?
The deadline to apply is April 12, 2003.
Please go to the
application page and follow instructions there to request workshop reservations.
You will be able to indicate your preferences and alternate workshop choices for both
Session A and Session B. If you need assistance, please call (562-951-4736)
or email Dawn (dwheeler@calstate.edu).
Fees will be collected from faculty who are admitted to the TSSI. This will help ITL defray costs of workshop materials, lunches, dinners, and refreshments. The fee is $65 for Sessions A and B combined; $30 for Session A alone (a one-day workshop); or $45 for Session B alone (a two-day workshop). You may pay your fees by credit card or check. Please do not submit payment until after you have been notified that you have been accepted for the TSSI. Admitted faculy who do not pay their registration fees by the May 4 deadline will forfeit their reservations and will be replaced by faculty on the waiting list.
After the application deadline of Saturday, April 12, ITL staff will attempt to place everyone in workshops. Because space is limited, ITL will fill workshops by giving priority to applicants planning to attend both Sessions A and B and to those who have not attended a Teacher-Scholar Summer Institute in the past three years. Also ITL will distribute workshop spaces among applicants from as many campuses as possible. If there are workshop spaces available after the April 12 deadline, they will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. All applicants will be notified, and those who have been placed in workshops will receive a confirmation email that includes a password to allow them to return to the registration page to pay their fees by Friday, May 2, 2003.
For those confirmed in workshops but unable to attend TSSI, the registration fee will be refunded only if a refund request is made in writing by June 1, 2003.
