LOCAL INFORMATION
For Your San Francisco Visit
TRANSPORTATION TO SAN FRANCISCO
AIR TRAVEL
TO SFO:
Many airlines, many prices
Door-To-Door Shuttles: These cost about $12 to $15 one-way single, and $9 per additional passenger if you go as a group. You can pick up a waiting or roving shuttle right at the curb or ask a Ground Transportation attendant for SuperShuttle, SFOAirporter, or Lorrie's. Taxis run about $40 one-way.
TO OAKLAND AIRPORT (About the same distance from downtown SF as SFO):
Cheaper airfares than SFO. Southwest Airlines has timely, economical service.
Door-To-Door Shuttles: These run about $23 to $45 for a single, adding about $10 per additional passenger if you go as a group. Ask for Bayporter, BayAirporter, or Bridge Airporter. Taxis to SF run about $65.
TRAIN/BUS
Train
10 AM to 10 PM from LA, with one daily departure. You'll have to take the Amtrak free bus to San Francisco from the Emeryville train station and then a taxi (about $9) from the drop-off spot downtown to your hotel. It is not walk-able, especially at night with luggage.
Bus
About 7 hours from LA, with many departures. Take a taxi (about $7) from the bus station to your hotel. Walking with luggage is NOT recommended.
DRIVING
Interstate 5 is fastest for most drivers from the south, but US 101 and especially CA 1 are more beautiful. If you are coming in from the north, take 101 straight to San Francisco or take I5 to I 80 and into the city.
- For driving instructions to the hotels, check http://www.unionsquarehotels.com
- For SFSU campus driving and parking directions, check
http://www.sfsu.edu/~parking
- To park on campus, follow the public parking signs to the Lake Merced Blvd. entrance. Drive to the main parking structure. Lock your car and come to the Cesar Chavez Student Center (see map). Parking is free on weekends. Weekday permits can be purchased at the conference registration desk and then placed on your car for the duration of your stay. Permits cost $2/day and cover 24 hours of reasonably secured parking, so leaving your car on campus should not be a problem.
ARRIVING IN SAN FRANCISCO
LODGING
USHG
We will be staying with the Union Square Hotel Group. The USHG is five small downtown hotel properties, all smack in the middle of downtown San Francisco. Our three hotels are The Sheehan, The Stratford, and The Fitzgerald. They are locally owned, with none large enough in itself to accommodate our lodging requirements, but, together, they can serve our collective needs. They are very affordable for San Francisco, and they provide the feel of a clean, small, non-mega-franchised boutique venue in a cosmopolitan city. All are within easy walking distances of such elegant shopping destinations as Neiman Marcus, Saks, Cartier, Nordstrom, Gumps, Dunhill, Gucci, Macy's, etc. as well as a variety of multi-ethnic discount places. As for restaurants, theaters, and entertainment spots, they are all easily stroll-able too! Walking to and from the subway station will reveal a typical slice of contemporary multicultural urban life.
For hotel information and driving directions, go to: http://www.unionsquarehotels.com. NOTE: We cannot register online because our group rates are in effect. Look over the three choices on the web site, then call a hotel directly.
Reservations
You will make your own hotel arrangements. Call the hotel directly and ask for the group rate. Identify your group as "The California State University." The cut-off date for the group rate is May 20, 2002. Requests after this date may lose the CSU discount. Cancellations must be made 48 hours in advance.
- Sheehan - $129/night, single or double, plus tax (415-775-6500 or 800-848-1529)
- Stratford - $119/night, single or double, plus tax. (415-397-7080 or 888-504-6835)
- Fitzgerald - $119/night, single or double, plus tax. (415-775-8100 or 888-334-6835)
Parking
Parking your car near the hotel will cost from $18 to $26 per night, but San Francisco State charges only $2 per weekday night (free on weekends) on campus.
Hotel Check-In
If you plan to park downtown, park where your hotel directs you. If you are checking into the hotel but plan to park on campus, park temporarily, check in, unload your things, and then drive to campus following the driving directions provided at the
SFSU Web site, or in the packet that will be given you when you register at the hotel.
Local Transportation
We will mainly use feet and public transportation. When you check in at your hotel, you will find in your packet some SF MUNI tokens for your no-transfer, 20-minute ride back and forth from downtown to campus. If you elect not to stay at the Union Square Hotel Group, let us know if you'll need MUNI tokens and we'll provide them when you check in at SFSU.
TO CAMPUS AND BACK
MUNI Tokens
Your tokens for public transportation will be waiting for you in a packet at the hotel desk along with conference information, maps, and local directions.
To SFSU Campus
To get to campus on the SF MUNI, walk over to Powell Street, then walk down Powell Street 2 to 3 blocks to the Powell Metro Station. At the MUNI gates (not the BART gates), put your token in the gate, descend to the tracks, and take the "M" (think "Mother") subway OUTBOUND to the SFSU Metro Station at campus (about 20 minutes). Walk straight from the station to the Cesar Chavez Student Center (about 3 to 5 minutes). Most conference sessions, including meals and plenary sessions, will take place in this building. To make it on time, leave the hotel between 3:00 and 3:45 PM on Sunday and between 7:00 and 7:45 AM on weekdays.
NOTE: Help with Public Transportation
From 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Sunday, June 16th, SFSU staff will be in the lobby of the three hotels to help provide directions for using the MUNI Metro. If you are arriving at the hotels at a time other than Sunday afternoon and want help using the public transportation system, call Donald Casella at 415-821-2414 a few days before you leave home.
Registering
At the Cesar Chavez Student Center, go to Jack Adams Hall on the Terrace (second floor) Level. It is most easily accessed by taking the stairway that is right in front of you when you enter the building. There also is a small elevator. Opening registration on Sunday starts at 4:00 PM, and weekday registration will open at 8 AM.

RETURNING HOME
Checkout
Follow your hotel procedures. You may leave your bags there for a fee or bring them to San Francisco State for free.
Staying On or Coming Early
Ask for the same group rates when you register for your hotel. They have agreed to extend these rates from Saturday through Thursday. If you ask individually, they might extend the rates even further.
Late Afternoon or Evening Departures
If you are flying home after the workshop is over on Tuesday or Wednesday evening, bring your baggage to the University and have the shuttles pick you up there. No sense in going all the way downtown and then to the airport.
Enjoy
We hope your stay in the city by the Golden Gate will be a pleasant one.
