Currently, I am studying in Accra, Ghana, for one year. The experience thus far has been extremely rewarding, on both a personal level and an academic one. I am learning about my main interests - development and gender - daily, and not just from a theoretical perspective.

The International Programs office does a great job introducing you to the city as well as the university itself.

This is the Balme Library at the University of Ghana where I attend classes. The library is filled with fascinating books on a variety of academic matters.
Adjacent to the library is the university bookstore, which is a more reliable source for up-to-date readings.

During a welcome durbar for international students, students at the university entertained us with an amazing musical performance and talent show as we got acclimated to our new home.
There were also a variety of delicious Ghanaian dishes and a delightful dance party that was rather unforgettable.

I am a resident at ISH II, the International Student Hostel.
Across the street there’s a night market where the locals sell fruit, market food, and a variety of other items you might need during your stay.
Egg sandwiches, mangoes, and fried yams with shito sauce are especially popular with students.

This is Jamestown, a central part of Accra. It is known for fishing and its famous lighthouse, which you can still visit.

At the National Theatre, there are a variety of performances you can attend throughout the year at moderate prices. It's about a 10-minute drive from campus.

No sport is more popular in Ghana than football. This is from the Ghana vs. Sudan game to qualify for the World Cup.
The stadium is in town, and the tickets are around 5 cedi. It's definitely worth it, even if you are not a sports fan.

Ghana is known for its beautiful crafts, and beads are one of its most popular items.
There are bead markets all around Accra. There are sellers around campus as well. Buying from them is a great way to begin to learn the great art of bargaining.

Kente cloth is another Ghanaian specialty, especially in the north.
I got a chance to visit a traditional Ghanaian Kente cloth making factory. Look at all the beautiful cloth!

And, finally, the beautiful African sun.
Of all the natural beauty in Ghana, the sun is often the most breathtaking.
