Liberal Studies Summary

Five Year Teacher Preparation Integration Program

Goal: To develop a five-year integrated teacher preparation program.

Objective: By July 1, 1998, develop a proposal for a Multiple Subjects Professional Program to deliver to students starting the junior year of their academic program.

  • Conduct meetings between Multiple Subject Credential and Liberal Studies Committees
  • Develop proposal and submit it to the appropriate school curriculum committees
  • Submit proposal to the university curriculum committee

Objective: By June 1, 1998, develop an appropriate curriculum in mathematics and science for Liberal Studies majors and increase the number of students selecting to emphasize these areas in their programs.

  • Develop a plan to work with Fresno Unified School District to strengthen the mathematics and science curriculum in the Liberal Studies Program
  • Submit a joint proposal for extramural funding to support this effort--proposal submitted to California Post Secondary Education Commission

Objective: By June 1, 1998, develop an appropriate curriculum in the Social Sciences for Liberal Studies Majors and increase the number of students selecting to emphasize this area in their programs.

  • Develop a plan to work with local area school districts to strengthen the Social Science curriculum in the Liberal Studies Program by hiring a Social Sciences Educator on the faculty of the School of Social Sciences to provide leadership in curriculum work in liberal studies.
  • Submit a joint proposal for extramural funding to support this effort--proposal under preparation by local school districts, School of Social Sciences and the School of Education and Human Development for submission to California Post Secondary Education Commission and other sources.

Objective: By June 1, 1998, develop an area of concentration (12 credit hours) dealing with conflict and violence in the classroom for Liberal Studies majors.

  • Convene meetings with Departments of Criminology, Ethnic Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Sociology to develop a program
  • Develop curriculum plan for submission to school and university curriculum committees

Objective: By August 15, 1998, Liberal Studies offerings in literature, writing and literacy will be reviewed in the departments of English, Linguistics and Speech Communication to incorporate pedagogical and field work experiences early in the students academic career.

  • Convene appropriate faculty (including community college and public school) for a two-week summer intensive writing project to develop appropriate course work.
  • Conduct appropriate staff development activities to ensure faculty involved in the teaching of these courses possess the skill needed to deliver the newly modified courses.
  • Create a procedure for the delivery of these lower division courses in the community colleges and establish articulation agreements

Objective: By December 12, 1998, mathematics and science courses in the Liberal Studies program will be delivered incorporating, when appropriate, pedagogical instruction through direct instruction or modeling.

  • Convene appropriate faculty (including community college and public school) for a two-week summer intensive writing project to develop appropriate course work
  • Conduct appropriate staff development activities to ensure faculty involved in the teaching of these courses possess the skill needed to deliver the newly modified courses
  • Create a procedure for the delivery of these lower division courses in the community colleges and establish articulation agreements

Objective: By August 15, 1998, General Education courses appropriate for prospective teachers will be identified for Liberal Studies majors.

Objective: By August 15, 1998, a plan will be developed to utilize resources in instruction on the campus, in the schools and the community colleges such as the Arnie Nixon Center for Children's Literature in the Fresno State Library.

  • Plan to be developed by the multiple subject credential faculty, the Liberal Studies Committee and the appropriate community college faculty
