Shontel Johnson joined the Office of General Counsel as a Paralegal in 2010. Ms. Johnson assists attorneys in litigation and trial preparation, handles Residency appeals, Immigration, and Pitchess motions. Her previous experience includes over 20 years as a litigation paralegal in the private sector. As a litigation paralegal, Shontel managed all aspects of litigation management from the initial filing period through trial, post-trial and appeal. She was responsible for researching and applying legal authorities and drafting a wide range of documents, including motions and discovery. She applied her skills in the realms of employment law, disability discrimination, torts, and commercial litigation, along with civil rights cases under 42 U.S.C. Section 1983. She has worked on appellate briefs, as well as petitions for rehearing and review, and facilitated the filing of a Petition for Writ of Certiorari to the United States Supreme Court. Her experience also includes a previous tenure as a judicial assistant in the state court system, where she was responsible for all administrative matters before, during, and after court proceedings. As a frontline representative, she managed the logistical functioning and flow of courtroom activities, and managed multiple tasks and a high volume of work – both time-sensitive and complex.
