Primary Election Results Change Political Landscape in Sacramento
This last February 5th, the voters of California had the opportunity to choose their Presidential nominee for the two major parties but also decided several matters including tribal gaming compacts, and term limits, and community college. The voters supported the passage of four gaming compacts but rejected both Proposition 92 and 93, which would have constitutionally guaranteed funding for community colleges and changed the state’s term limits law respectively. Health Care on Hold
On January 28th, the universal health care proposal put forth by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and State Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, ABx1 1, failed to advance out of the Senate Health Committee chaired by Senator Sheila Kuehl after a lengthy debate, and input from the Legislative Analysts Office. This proposal, which split labor groups, and united tobacco, the California Nurses Association, and health insurance providers in opposition, was only able to receive the vote of one Democratic member, Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas of Los Angeles.
