Legislative Profile: Mark Wyland

Senator Mark Wyland was elected in 2006 and represents the 38th District, which includes cities of north San Diego County. He is a member of several committees and serves as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Education, which considers all legislative measures dealing with K-12 education and the state’s colleges and universities.

One of Senator Wyland’s key issues is education and since June 12, 2007, Senator Wyland has proposed 11 bills, many of which focus on education, from elementary to postsecondary, as well as technical training. In February of this year, he introduced SB 637 which would require United States history and government be incorporated into the high school exit exam.

Senator Wyland served on the Escondido Union School District board from 1997 until his election to the State Assembly in 2000. He currently serves as a trustee for Pomona College.

Senator Wyland holds a Bachelor’s degree from Pomona College in Claremont and a Master’s degree in political science from Columbia University in New York City.
