Trustees Toney and Fong Confirmed by the Senate

Last summer Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the appointments of Kenneth Fong and Glen Toney to the California State University Board of Trustees. The Senate did not formally take action on these appointments until this month when they were both confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 37-0 on June 18th. The two Trustees will serve their appointments until 2013.

Below is a brief biography for the two Board of Trustee Members that were confirmed. For a more complete biography for these and all the Board of Trustee’s, please visit the Board of Trustee’s website.

Kenneth Fong, PhD., 59, of Atherton, has served as chairman of Kenson Ventures, a venture capital firm focusing on the areas of biotechnology and life sciences, since 1999. He was previously the founder and chief executive officer of Clontech Laboratories from 1984 to 1999 and a senior staff fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health from 1980 to 1983. Fong was named 2006 Alumni of the Year by California State University, San Francisco and serves on the College of Science and Engineering Advisory Board. He is also the president of the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in North America, a member of the Committee of 100 and a board member for the Monte Jade Science and Technology Association. Fong is the former president of the Asian American Manufacturers’ Association and former chair of Chinese Performing Arts of San Jose. Fong is a Republican.

Glen Toney, Ed.D., 67, of Chico, served for 23 years as an executive with Applied Materials, retiring as group vice president of corporate affairs in 2002. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Andrew Corporation and Authernative, Inc. Toney was previously assistant superintendent of schools for Palo Alto Unified School District from 1973 to 1979 and for Ravenswood City School District from 1972 to 1973. He was also assistant to the superintendent of the Cupertino Union Elementary School District and director of the Education Opportunity Program for San Jose State University. Toney is a former president of the California State University, Chico Alumni Association and was named Distinguished Alumni of the Year by the School of Engineering and Computer Science. He currently is a member of the advisory boards to the president of the University, the School of Natural Science and the School of Engineering and Computer Science. He is also a former member of the board of the National Conference for Community Justice, the Bay Area School Reform Collaborative and the Curriculum Redesign Committee for California State University, San Jose. Toney is a Republican.
