Assembly Member Julia Brownley (41st AD)
Newly elected Assembly Member Julia Brownley replaces Fran Pavley in representing the 41st District, which includes Los Angeles and Ventura Counties and the cities of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Encino, Hidden Hills, Lake Sherwood, Los Angeles, Malibu, Oak Park, Oxnard, Pacific Palisades, Port Hueneme, Santa Monica, Tarzana, Westlake Village and Woodland Hills.
Ms. Brownley was named by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez chair of the Budget Subcommittee #2 on Education Finance. The Budget Sub-Committee will meet in March April, and May to go over every line item in the proposed Budget. Each house will hold an overview hearing where the Chancellor testifies about the CSU priorities for the upcoming Budget.
Assembly Member Brownley received her B.A. in political science from George Washington University and M.B.A. from the American University. Prior to joining the Assembly, Ms. Brownley served three terms on the Santa Monica–Malibu School Board, serving as the Board President three times. Assembly Member Brownley worked with the California State PTA and the Community for Excellent Public Schools (CEPS) to launch the "Caravan for Kids," which consisted of over 5000 children and parents coming to the steps of the Capitol to lobby the Governor and State Legislature to create a state plan for excellence in education.
Assembly Member Brownley while president of the local school board, initiated policy to purchase only natural gas buses when replacing older diesel buses. Additionally, she won board approval to ban pesticides and herbicides at school sites and to incorporate "green" building objectives into all future plans for district facilities. She also convinced the Santa Monica-Malibu Board of Education to create a health clinic at Santa Monica High School in partnership with the Venice Family Clinic and Blue Cross.
