Board of Trustees 2007 Legislative Program
For the first year of the 2007-08 legislative session the Board of Trustee’s legislative program includes two Assembly and two Senate Measures. While the CSU has worked with Assembly Member Hector De La Torre previously, this will be the first time the CSU has worked with Senator Mark Ridley Thomas or newly elected Assembly Member Mary Salas.

In addition to these 3 measures, Senator Jeff Denham has introduced a placeholder measure that may ultimately contain a remedy to the existing requirement of the Department of General Services purchasing vehicles for the CSU. More »

Presidential Election, Term Limits & Redistricting Plans
In 1999 the legislature, in an effort to make California more relevant to nationwide politics, moved up its primary from June to March. These attempts only made other early states push their deadlines up, which eventually lead to 9 other states sharing the same date as California, negating any benefit to the State.

In addition, many felt that such an early primary and a traditional November general ballot made it impossible to build traction and keep voters engaged. Because of these reasons, California’s primary was moved back to its traditional June date in 2004 (SB 1730 Ross Johnson). More »

Senate Education Hearing on Outreach (Academic Preparation)
Senator Jack Scott held an informational hearing on outreach, with his stated goal of being better prepared for the 2007-08 budget. He also noted that while he believes outreach works, he wants to understand what works best.

Senator Scott noted that within the last 5 years the University of California (UC) had improved numbers for Latino students (from 13.8% to 16%), and stayed constant with African-American students (3.1%). The CSU’s Latino student population meanwhile increased from 26.7% to 34% and African American students went from 6.7 % to 7.1%. Senator Alex Padilla also mentioned his desire to look at how the community colleges work with CSU and UC and mentioned his Select Committee on Outreach. More »
