Information on Campus Efforts to Improve Opportunities for Women
in Athletics, Including: Addition of Sports, Reallocation of Resources,
and Construction or Renovation of Facilities
California State University, Bakersfield
- California State University, Bakersfield added women's soccer
in 1996-97, women's water polo in 1997-98 and women's cross-country
in 1998-99.
- During the 1999-2000 academic year, the university will
hire a women's basketball coach and the women's basketball
program will be implemented in the fall of 2000.
- The university made major improvements to the women's softball
complex, including new backstop, dugouts, irrigation system,
electronic scoreboard, new bleachers, landscaping, and an
additional practice facility.
- The soccer facility has been improved with lights, additional
seating and an electronic scoreboard to facilitate the women's
program and provide doubleheader opportunities.
- New bleachers, scoreboard, decking and awnings have improved
the Aquatic Facility and improved access for the women's swimming
and women's water polo programs.
- The tennis facilities for women's tennis teams have also
been improved, including resurfacing of the courts, a new
press box, a back court wall, and significant landscaping
features.
- By the end of the 2000-2001 academic year, CSU Bakersfield
will have at least nine sports for women and six sports for
men and will be spending approximately 60 percent of its resources
on women's sports and 40 percent on men's sports.
California State University, Chico
- California State University, Chico eliminated the men's
football program in the spring of 1997.
- Men's golf was added in the summer of 1998.
- Women's swimming will be added upon the completion of the
university's future aquatic center as needed to meet goals
of the decree.
- The university is considering the possibility of the addition
of women's tennis in the spring of 2001 in order to continue
to remain in compliance.
- In the spring of 1997, renovation of the baseball stadium
was completed, including new and modern locker room space
for the women's soccer and softball programs.
- In June of 1999, renovations of the seating in the basketball
arena were completed which provide a more desirable venue
for the women's volleyball and women's basketball programs.
- In the fall of 1999, renovations began on the soccer stadium.
This will improve facilities for the women's soccer program
and will also continue to upgrade the complex surrounding
the women's softball field.
California State University, Dominguez Hills
- California State University, Dominguez Hills added women's
tennis, women's cross-country and women's indoor/outdoor track.
California State University, Fresno
- California State University, Fresno eliminated men's swimming
and men's water polo in 1994-95.
- Women's soccer was added in 1995-96 and women's equestrian
in 1996-97.
- The university constructed a new softball stadium and press
box (1995-97).
- A new women's locker room was constructed in 1995.
- A new women' volleyball/sport court was constructed in 1996.
- The university constructed a new men's and women's weight
facility in 1996.
- The women's soccer office was renovated in 1997.
- The men's and women's training facilities were renovated
in 1997-98.
- New air conditioning was added to the North Gym for women's
basketball and volleyball in 1995.
- New chair back seating was added to the North Gym for women's
basketball and volleyball (1997).
- A new men's and women's tennis center complex was constructed
in 1997.
- The women's swimming locker room was renovated in 1998.
- The university renovated the women's soccer field, locker
rooms, and training area in 1998-99.
- A long jump pit for women's track was constructed in 1998.
- Equestrian facility improvements were made in 1996-97.
- The total cost of constructing and renovating the above
facilities for women's programs was $8.3 million.
California State University, Fullerton
- California State University, Fullerton added women's indoor
track in 1998-99.
- The university has remodeled the women's varsity locker
room.
- The university has renovated the gymnasium and improved
the facility with chair back seating for both women's and
men's basketball, women's volleyball, women's gymnastics,
and wrestling.
- The university has completed the soccer stadium support
building which houses men's and women's soccer, softball,
and baseball.
- Chair back seating has been added to the first base side
of the women's softball facility.
- A major construction project is underway this year to finish
the baseball stadium and reconfigure the softball complex
to provide additional seats, office space, locker rooms, and
a donor hospitality area for both baseball and softball.
California State University, Hayward
- A major restructuring of the athletic program at California
State University, Hayward occurred in the spring of 1992 due
to fiscal exigencies. As resources became available, a number
of athletic programs which were eliminated in 1992 were restored.
Numerous factors were considered when final decisions were
made about restoration of programs or the addition of a new
program, e.g. the addition of women's water polo in 1997.
Some of the factors considered included student interest,
department curriculum, gender equity, faculty expertise, program
costs, availability of competition, athletic facilities, and
NCAA, NAIA and conference affiliation issues.
- The existing field house facility was reconfigured in the
fall of 1994 to accommodate women's soccer, cross-country
and softball athletes, in addition to athletes in men's cross-country,
baseball and soccer.
- In the fall of 1996, gymnasium space was reassigned for
a women's locker room for basketball athletes to create a
facility that was comparable to the one made available for
men.
- In the fall of 1997, the athletic training facility in the
main gymnasium was relocated to a larger room to serve more
effectively the increased number of female athletes in the
intercollegiate athletic program.
- In the winter of 1998, the former athletic training facility
in the main gymnasium was modified to create a separate locker
room facility for women's volleyball.
Humboldt State University
- Humboldt State University added women's varsity soccer and
women's varsity rowing in 1995-1996. The university added
the above programs in order to comply with the consent decree
and both women's soccer and women's varsity rowing have developed
into strong programs that compete on a regional and national
level.
- Humboldt State University has implemented a broad-based
Division II intercollegiate athletics program which is comprised
of seven women's sports and five men's programs.
- The university is in the planning stage of construction
for a boating instruction safety center which will provide
a new $1.7 million facility for the campus' intercollegiate
women's rowing program. The new facility will include a boat
bay, training room, locker room area and equipment room. Construction
is scheduled to begin in 2000.
California State University, Long Beach
- California State University, Long Beach added women's water
polo and women's soccer to increase opportunities for women
athletes.
- The university made improvements to an existing field where
soccer matches are held, including athletic field maintenance
and upgrades that were necessary in order to start up a new
sport such as women's soccer.
- Bleachers were brought in to the university's pool deck
so that the university could seat the number of spectators
who were drawn to the women's water polo contests.
- The university undertook the resurfacing of the tennis courts.
- Improvement continues to be made to the university's softball
field each year. Padding was added to the backstop and bleachers
were painted and maintained.
- Women's volleyball and women's basketball locker rooms were
painted and upgraded.
- The university constructed volleyball offices and conference
rooms for the coaches.
- The university resurfaced the track.
