| Paul Yu Named President of San José
State |
The California State University's Board of Trustees
announced today that it has chosen Paul Yu to be president of
San José State University. Yu is currently president of the
State University of New York College at Brockport.
"I am delighted to have the opportunity to become a
member of San José State University, an institution with a
great past, and in view of its enormous potential, an even
greater future," said Yu. "I have had long and broad
experience in leading public institutions, and I look forward
to the challenges and opportunities ahead at San José State."
"Paul Yu will be a remarkable president," said Bill
Hauck, chair of the CSU Trustees' presidential search
committee. "He is a scholar and a proven leader who has left a
legacy of accomplishments at three distinguished
universities."
Yu, a professor of philosophy, has been president of
the State University of New York at Brockport since 1997.
Prior to joining SUNY, Yu was provost and senior vice
president for academic affairs at Butler University, where he
also served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences. At Central Michigan University, he was the associate
dean, College of Arts and Sciences, and chair of the
philosophy department. He was also a Fulbright Lecturer in
Philosophy at National Taiwan University. Yu earned his Ph.D.,
master's and bachelor's degrees in philosophy at the
University of Michigan.
Yu will assume the presidency on July 15. He succeeds
Bob Caret who left last summer to assume the presidency of
Towson State University in Maryland. Joseph N. Crowley, who
spent 22 years as president of the University of Nevada, Reno,
has been serving as interim president of SJSU.

Associate Vice
Chancellor Named
Keith
O. Boyum, a faculty member and administrator at Cal State Fullerton,
has been hired as the Associate Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs in
the Chancellor's Office. Boyum began his career on the faculty of
the Cal State Fullerton political science department in 1972 and
served as chair of the Division of Political Science and Criminal
Justice for three years. He also served as Associate Vice President,
Academic Programs, with oversight of accreditation, academic
planning, graduate studies, international programs and
accountability. He was named as Cal State Fullerton's Outstanding
Professor in 1994. Boyum will assume his new position on Aug. 1.

Cal Poly Donation
Nationally renowned trial attorney Joseph Cotchett and his
wife, Victoria, both CSU alumni, have pledged $7 million to Cal Poly
San Luis Obispo to create a model program to place more math and
science teachers in classrooms in low-income neighborhoods. The gift
represents the largest pledge from an alumnus to the school's
Centennial Fundraising Campaign, and helped the campus to reach its
$225 million goal well ahead of its December campaign end. More

CSU Abroad
Cal State Bakersfield anthropology professor Robert Yohe and
student Deanne Heikkinen, are part of a team that will spend
this summer helping to unravel the mysteries of ancient Egypt
at an archaeological site along the Nile River. The excavation
will be located just north of the village of El-Hibeh in the
ancient Egyptian town of Tuedjoi. It is believed the town
was founded between 1500 B.C. and 1070 B.C. More information.
