This proposal supports Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) in helping students pass the HSEE by the end of the 10th grade. The project supports the infrastructure of school-based and existing CAPP-supported UC Davis outreach programs and enhances programming of a recently formed local GEAR UP partnership, whose goal is to prepare students for successful admission into a four-year higher education program.

The partnership nucleus includes Sacramento High School, Kit Carson Middle School, California Middle School, and UC Davis. The program model provides academic counseling; professional development in English Language Arts and Mathematics; Reservation for College lessons and activities for 7th and 8th grades; Academic Tutoring; EAOP On Track services in the development of a college preparatory work plan; and family education in college preparatory requirements and access to higher education.

The objective of CAPP funded positions will be to build on existing CAPP-supported programs that provide intensive on-site professional development in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Workshops and individualized training will focus on articulation of curriculum from sixth through twelfth grade; coaching in teacher lesson preparation and delivery in the California State Standards for mathematics and English, with specific emphasis on the standards covered in the HSEE; Reading and Writing Across the Content Areas; and Discover Math, a new data-driven mathematics approach that will be used to bring up middle school students, who average a third-grade skill in mathematics, up to seventh grade mathematics skills as defined by the California standards.
