Summary
Project SABLE will provide significant support for
a team of one high school and two feeder junior high
schools in Calexico Unified School District to move
forward in its collaborative effort to enable all students
to pass the California High School Exit Exam and assure
that all students are prepared to exercise the option
of a college education upon graduation. Seventy-two
percent of the 3500 students served by Team 7-12 are
English Language Learners (ELL). Using approaches indicated
by research as most effective in addressing the needs
of these students, Project SABLE will articulate with
other initiatives at the three sites to provide the
following:
- Professional development on standards, assessment,
HSEE and best instructional practices
- Alignment and articulation of the curriculum, assessment,
instruction, and interventions at the three schools
with the state standards and the HSEE.
- An implementation program that involves peer coaching
to support teachers.
- Continued development of student support programs
during and outside of the regular school day.
Project activities will include the establishment of
a comprehensive assessment program to thoroughly assess
student needs and strengths relative to standards tested
by the HSEE and the development of an individual 7-12
standards-based learning plan leading to success on
the HSEE and readiness for college. Project SABLE funds
will support lead teachers at each site, provide for
articulated curriculum and assessment development, and
support teacher training and coaching. San Diego State
University-Imperial Valley Campus will serve as Project
SABLES's post-secondary partner, providing staff development,
curriculum training, and support in an action research
project focusing on questions related to second language
learners, standards-based curriculum and preparation
for the HSEE.
