Eligibility Part-Time Retirement Program
Employees who are excluded from membership in CalPERS because of time base
or length of appointment must participate in the CSU Part-Time Employee Retirement
Program. Typically, this includes:
- Part-time employees who work less than half-time;
- Half-time employees who work less than one-year;
- Seasonal employees; and
- Temporary employees who work less than six months (or 125 days if employed
on a per diem basis, or 1,000 hours if employed on an hourly basis) in a fiscal
year (July 1 through June 30).
The following employees are exempt by law from participating in the CSU Part-Time Employee Retirement Program:
- Full-time students who regularly attend classes at the school where they work;
- Temporary employees hired to handle emergencies such as earthquakes, fires, floods, and storms;
- People hired through programs to relieve unemployment, such as summer youth programs;
- People who have retired from the State of California or from other public employment which was covered by CalPERS;
- Authorized nonresident aliens with F-1 or J-1 teaching visas;
- People who are covered under CalPERS or STRS through other employment with the state.
