This session will focus on the organizational and programmatic strategies for building fundraising programs. Included in this session will be a panel discussion by CSU presidents who tell of successful strategies at their campuses in developing major gifts, in planning major comprehensive campaigns and in developing campus and community support for aggressive advancement and development programs.

In this session, participants will hear from a dean about the challenges for academic leadership in building a successful school or department-based development effort. Roles of the dean, other staff, faculty and volunteers will be addressed with frank observations on what has worked and what hasn’t. This session will also look at the development team and the synergy that makes it work.

-- The Deans and the Director of Development (DoD) – Expectations and Accountability

The workshop explores the partnership between development and academics. How development staff and academic staff can work together to achieve common goals. The session explores the process of setting realistic expectations and building accountability measures to meet those expectations. This is a nuts and bolts session that provides practical suggestions based on real situations.
   
-- Advisory Boards and the Effective Use of Volunteers
Presented by CASE Facilitators:
  Sheldon Caplis, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, University of Maryland, Baltimore County
   
This session will describe successful models for forming school advisory boards, recruiting the right volunteers and focusing on the development of strong fund raising programs.
   
3:45 p.m. Communities of practice
Group discussion session led by CSU facilitators and CASE Faculty
   
In the second part of this session, participants will work in facilitated groups of communities of practice to address issues particular to different schools and programs. Small groups will focus on topics particular to schools of business, science and technology, education, arts and humanities engineering and architecture and health and human services. This is an opportunity to discuss the issues each participant faces in a peer-to-peer session.

This full-morning session will address many of the issues specific to line development staff including:

  • the tension between raising outright gifts and raising deferred gifts
  • balancing time, talent and relationship-building in developing major gifts
  • tips for making “artful asks” and showing gratitude after the gift is made
  • planning for a major campaign
