Commendation for Dr. J. Vincent (Vince) Buck

WHEREAS: Vince Buck has been a member of the Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU) since 1991, serving on the Faculty Affairs, Academic Affairs, Fiscal and Governmental Affairs, and the Executive Committee of the ASCSU; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck held leadership positions in the ASCSU such as Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, Chair of Faculty Affairs, Vice Chair of the ASCSU, and Member at Large of the Executive Committee; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck served the ASCSU on the CSU Institute for Teaching and Learning from 2004 to 2006; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck had a leadership role in the preparation of the report, Shared Governance Reconsidered: Improving Decision-Making in the California State University (March 2001); and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck managed to outlast all but one Statewide Senator, rising to the position of penultimate most senior member of the ASCSU; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck served the ASCSU by taking on the challenging assignment of visiting the Open University of Britain; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck served the Fullerton campus in various leadership roles, including being a member of the campus Executive Committee for many years and chairing the campus Senate from 1996 through 1998; and

WHEREAS: The Faculty at Fullerton justly recognized Vince’s contributions by awarding him the Faculty Leadership in Collegial Governance Award in 2000; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck has never been afraid to speak his mind on issues, believing that speaking “truth to power” is always appropriate; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck has never been afraid to resurrect one of the dead horses in his corral; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck has been a staunch champion of sustainability even before it was in vogue, frequently celebrating the end of the academic year by biking from the last meeting of the ASCSU back to his home in Fullerton; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck has never passed up food, beer, and opportunities for socializing, being one of the founders of the Fullerton “no name” Faculty Club; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck has demonstrated his commitment to multicultural activities by actively celebrating Cinco de Mayo which, coincidentally, happens to be his birthday; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck has been a champion of collegial governance and a mentor extraordinaire; and

WHEREAS: Vince Buck has never shied away from the role of the behind-the-scenes power broker for any election; therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU thank Vince Buck for his many years of dedicated and valuable leadership and service; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the ASCSU wish Vince Buck well as he begins the next chapter of his life where he plans to learn new languages, become a master cook, play new musical instruments and travel with his wife Jane, while continuing his civic and other community activities.
