Commendation for Dr. Marshall L. Cates

WHEREAS: The faculty of California State University Los Angeles (CSULA) expressed its confidence and respect in Dr. Marshall L. Cates by electing him to four consecutive three-year terms to the Academic Senate of the California State University (ASCSU); and

WHEREAS: Dr. Cates actively and engagingly served on ASCSU standing committees for ten consecutive years; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Cates efficaciously served two consecutive one-year terms as campus senate chair at CSULA; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Cates represented the ASCSU and the faculty of the California State University(CSU) and provided invaluable leadership to numerous statewide committees focused on improving student proficiency in mathematics, especially those dealing with the Entry Level Math (ELM) test and the Early Assessment Program (EAP); and

WHEREAS: Dr. Cates unflaggingly worked on smoothing the transfer of students from the California Community Colleges to the CSU, especially on the Inter-segmental Major Preparation Articulation Curriculum (IMPAC) and Lower Division Transfer Pattern (LDTP) projects; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Cates ably undauntedly and ably fulfilled the challenge of representing the faculty view on the CSU’s strategic planning (Access to Excellence) steering committee; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Cates served with great distinction and fine digital dexterity as Secretary of the ASCSU; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Cates constructively redefined the term curmudgeon and added great wit and penetrating analysis to ASCSU floor debates; therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University thank Dr. Marshall L. Cates for his prescient contributions and leadership; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University wish Dr. Cates and his family all the very best in the years to come.
