Commendation of Dr.
WHEREAS, Cal Caplan has served on the Academic Senate California State University (CSU) with distinction since 1999, ably and effectively representing CSU, Hayward and CSU, East Bay; and
WHEREAS, Cal Caplan has served with distinction as a member of the Teacher Education and K-12 Relations Committee, including as Vice-Chair of the Committee; and
WHEREAS, Cal Caplan has served for nearly a decade on the Forgiveable Loan/Doctoral Incentive Advisory and Selection Committees and on other systemwide committees and task forces, including the Graduate and Post-Baccalaureate Education Task Force and, most recently, the General Education Advisory Committee; and
WHEREAS, Cal Caplan has exercised extraordinary leadership on his campus for nearly four decades, having served on three University standing committees and at least fourteen other University committees; and
WHEREAS, Cal Caplan coached a combined nineteen years in springboard diving and water polo and, along with five of his athletes, has been inducted into the CSU, East Bay Athletic Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Cal Caplan is a Fellow of the American College of Sport Medicine and seventeen of his students have gone on to attain doctoral degrees and then distinguished careers in physical education, sports medicine, higher education, and government leadership; and
WHEREAS, Cal Caplan has been the driving force behind the most bountifully supplied and best attended Academic Senate CSU Thursday post-plenary socials; and
WHEREAS, Cal Caplan is known for chauffeuring the junior senator from his campus to and from LAX and also for helping that senator keep his passions in check; and
WHEREAS, Cal Caplan has served the Academic Senate CSU both financially and spiritually by rooming with Senator Wheeler and golfing with Senator Tarjan (more trying experiences, both, than anyone might imagine!); and
WHEREAS, Cal Caplan is known for his gracious personality and convivial nature; therefore be it
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU congratulate Cal Caplan on his most extraordinary combination of campus and systemwide jobs and roles, and thank him for his dedication to shared governance and service in the Academic Senate CSU; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU wish Cal Caplan the best in the remainder of his FERP service and his retirement, noting that his sense of optimism and many contributions to shared governance and to the students and faculty of the CSU will truly be missed.
