Resolution Honoring Nancy Carmichael on the
Occasion of Her Retirement

WHEREAS, Nancy Carmichael has, since her debut at the Academic Senate of the California State University, insisted on correct grammar and syntax, persuasive rhetoric, and good usage as befits a graduate of the Lynn Peters School for Wordsmiths; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Carmichael displayed potential early by sitting with a standing committee during her first year with the Academic Senate CSU––which potential many are still waiting to see realized; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Carmichael has shown such an unwavering devotion to the academic and procedural integrity of general education that she has sometimes driven lesser people from the room or put them to sleep; and

WHEREAS, Despite her awareness that no evidence exists to show that people learn from past mistakes, she has tirelessly reminded the Academic Senate CSU of earlier follies and missteps in the hope of progress; and

WHEREAS, Not only has Nancy been a faithful and critical reviewer of courses submitted by community colleges for acceptance into CSU's IGETC and General Education Breath GE Program, she also has kept the tedious deliberations bearable with her wit, humor, and jingles and by generously supplying the committee with gourmet candies and odd assortments of goodies; and

WHEREAS, She expended much energy in searching out and eventually eating at a wide variety of restaurants in the local area, much to the endless surprise of her companions; and

WHEREAS, She has been compassionate to all of us in times of stress and illness; and

WHEREAS, She has held steadily to her positive beliefs about the importance of the Academic Senate and the Senate at San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS, Her contributions to the Senate at San Diego State University were significant in that, among other things, she raised the standard for secretaryship; and

WHEREAS, Those who followed her to San Diego in separate cars often had difficulty in keeping up with her fast moving sports car; and

WHEREAS, There are many who claim oracularly that they have had many good times with her; therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University, wish Nancy, a.k.a. Madame Bon Mot, a full life in which she attempts no more good than she and Jack can bear; and be it further

RESOLVED: That Nancy remembered that her colleagues will miss her and think of her whenever we consider the wording of a document.
