Supporting Academic Freedom for CSU International
Exchange and Study-Abroad Programs
AS-2788-06/FA - November 9, 2006
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU strongly supports the academic
freedom of its faculty in developing and implementing international exchange and
study-abroad programs.
RATIONALE:
Questions have been raised recently about the appropriateness of an international exchange
program for CSU students in Cyprus. This question is scheduled to be addressed at a
Committee of the Whole meeting of the Board of Trustees at its November 14-15, 2006 meeting.
Normal curricular processes ensure that international exchange and study-abroad programs are of
sufficient academic rigor and provide appropriate educational experiences.
The decisions affecting the viability and effectiveness of such programs are the province
of campus faculty and administrators. Outside attempts to change these decisions are infringements
on the academic freedom of those campus personnel.
Note: this resolution will be forwarded to the Office of International Programs (CSU).
