Commendation for CSU Voter Registration Efforts

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University (CSU) commend the CSU community—including the California State Student Association (CSSA) and other student organizations, as well as the California Faculty Association (CFA) and other faculty groups for its highly successful efforts at increasing voter registration prior to the November 2004 general election; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU urge the CSU community to continue its efforts to increase voter registration and related forms of civic engagement in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be distributed to the CSSA, the AS/ASI leadership on individual campuses, the CFA, campus senates, university presidents, the Chancellor, and the Board of Trustees.

RATIONALE: One of the traditional goals of higher education in American society has been to foster a well-educated and civically engaged citizenry. The encouragement of voter registration in a non-partisan manner contributes to this end. Various segments of the CSU community throughout the system participated in a campaign to increase voter registration in the months leading up to the Fall 2004 general election with considerable success. This commendation recognizes the efforts of the CSU community for its efforts in this regard.
